Production
Star Trek (still known as Star Trek XI) received the green light in late February, at which point pre-production officially began. [10] Paramount sent out their first press release regarding Star Trek on 27 February 2007, in which it was officially confirmed that production on the film was underway, that J.J. Abrams was directing, and that the film was set for release on Christmas Day 2008. [11]
Shooting on Star Trek is set to begin on 5 November 2007 [12] and is expected to last until March 2008. Rehearsals are slated to begin the week of 19 October 2007. [13]
Shooting was initially slated to begin in summer of 2007 [14] before the filmmakers stated their belief that shooting could actually begin in April. [15]
Most of the filming will take place on the Paramount lot; the stages currently planned for use are Paramount Stages 8, 9, 11, 14, 15, and 18. However, there are also plans to use a stage at Universal Studios, reportedly for “planetary shooting” requiring a larger stage. [16] In total, eleven soundstages will be used for the production. [17]
In addition, Star Trek and Paramount Pictures personnel scouted for filming locations in Iceland, which will make this the first Star Trek production to film outside the United States. Two Iceland-based production companies, Pegasus and Saga Film, are vying for the project. Paramount has sent over budgeting plans to both companies, and Abrams himself will soon be visiting Iceland to look over the locations scouted. Shooting in Iceland is expected to begin in the spring of 2008 and should take up two weeks of the 85-day shoot. [18][19][20]
As of 3 May 2007, budgeting on the film was not yet complete. By that time, some members of the art department (still being filled out by production designer Scott Chambliss) were already working on the film, albeit primarily from their homes until they could move into offices on the Paramount lot, which was possibly done by the middle of May. Set construction was slated to begin in July. [21] [22]
Set construction on the various stages has been underway since September. Most of the design work for the film was completed by 12 October 2007. The budget is estimated to be between $120 and $150 million, which is higher than any of the of the previous Star Trek films. [23]
Industrial Light & Magic will reportedly provide the special visual effects for the film. [24] This will be the seventh Star Trek film on which the company has worked.
